Why We Exist - So that home is not a hardship.

Why does Housing Colorado exist? Colorado is one of the fastest growing states in the nation, and for hundreds of thousands of our residents, quality housing is priced out of reach. Housing inventory is low and costs continue to skyrocket. Currently, over 25% of Coloradans spend more than 50% of their income on housing, putting these residents at financial risk and destabilizing our communities. Many of our state’s essential workers, including teachers, police officers, health care workers and retail employees don’t earn enough to pay market rental rates — let alone own a home. Housing Colorado is a comprehensive industry association that is dedicated to serving professionals who are designing, developing and increasing support for affordable housing in Colorado.

Affordable housing isn’t just an agenda item for our organization; it’s the sole reason we are here. Being at the forefront of this issue, we are called upon to lead, educate, activate and innovate to ensure that Colorado’s communities are affordable, healthy, vibrant and safe. We represent and funnel the energies of a wide variety of industry sectors, constituencies and geographic regions across the state. 

History and Legacy. 

Housing Colorado was officially launched in 2005 with the merger of two non-profits (Colorado Affordable Housing Partnership and Colorado Rural Housing NOW!), as well as the restructuring of a third agency (the Colorado Low-Income Housing Campaign). A task force comprised of key leaders within the affordable housing community, which became Housing Colorado’s founding leadership, identified tremendous synergy of the three independent organizations. Through a more unified approach, the new organization of Housing Colorado would more effectively shift public consciousness and the policy environment to provide a wider range of affordable housing options in Colorado.

Housing Colorado is not just an organization you belong to; it’s an organization that you move forward with - into greater knowledge and a greater ability to serve all of Colorado through affordable housing. There is value in belonging to an organization that is sought after for expertise, information, speaking engagements and partnerships. Housing Colorado is resolute in purpose and passion and in service of our members.
